french knot heart.

For this DIY, you will need :

Fabric (I used an ivory canvas), masking tape, embroidery hoop (4" pictured here),
needle, DMC embroidery floss (this project took two skeins),
pencil, craft glue, and clothespins (optional).

First, tape the edges of your fabric to prevent fraying.  Then, sketch out your heart.
Yes, of course, you can make any shape!

Start filling in your shape with French knots.
I didn't separate the threads; all six threads are used in the knots. It made them nice and bulky.

To make a French knot, wrap your thread twice around the needle.  Wrap toward you.
This keeps the individual threads from separating.

Insert needle close to where you came up in the fabric, but not directly back into same hole.
Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Work until heart is filled in.  This took me a cozy weekend / Homeland marathon.

Cut your fabric about 1/2" around the embroidery hoop.

Apply a thin layer of glue to the inside of your embroidery hoop and press down the fabric.

I used clothespins to hold the fabric because I ran out of fingers!

Enjoy your labor of love!

Happy creating + xoxo,
Karen
